Today's polymer silicone renders have been created that can go over existing renders, reducing the need to completely get back to the original brickwork, sometimes this can be more beneficial for a number of reasons.

Especially if you have cheaper traditional sand and cement renders on your property currently, when removing existing render it will often blow or take the face of your bricks and cause considerably more damage if you attempt to take it off. So re-rendering is a much better option in this case.
